Week 6 - Mary

I just completed my sixth week of the summer immersion program at Weill Cornell. Working under the supervision of Dr. Prince, I continued segmenting CT and MRI images to obtain kidney volume measurements and finalized the inclusion and exclusion criteria for our retrospective review study. As a reminder, this study will examine how kidney volume changes over time in ADPKD patients following transplantation, and how these volumetric changes correlate with kidney function. Finalizing the criteria has yielded a defined cohort of qualifying patients, representing a meaningful milestone after several weeks of refinement and organization.

This week, I also realized that most published work addresses kidney transplantation and its effect on native kidney volume. However, ADPKD can independently cause severe hepatic enlargement, in some cases warranting liver transplantation without concurrent kidney transplantation. To my knowledge, no study has examined the effect of isolated liver transplantation on native kidney volume in this patient population. This appears to be a natural extension of our current research study, and I hope to explore this gap further over the next two weeks.

Week 8 - Eddie Wei: Final Image Classification AI Model Results and Ending Thoughts

Bladder Image Collection and Classification Model Explanation                   Figure 1: Some screenshots of bladder images segmented and classified (81 Images Total) During the final week of the immersion, I was able to coordinate access to the bladder images collected with the Histolog system and begin using them for analysis. Using ImageJ, I selected and segmented regions representing high-grade, low-grade, and normal bladder tissue. These classifications were confirmed in collaboration with the pathology department using corresponding H&E-stained sections and discussions. In addition, during a prostate removal multiport robotic surgery this Wednesday, Dr.Scherr was able to extract additional normal bladder tissue that I was missing and imaged them in the operating room with the SamanTree histolog scanner. Week One: Eddie Wei

Over the first week of immersion, I had the opportunity to observe a couple standard urologic operating room procedures, each offering a different perspective on diagnosis, imaging, and operative care. On June 1, I observed two standard operating room procedures. The first involved the treatment of four urinary bladder stones using a cystoscope inserted through the male urethra. The cystoscope was first equipped with a specialized head capable of generating a stream of water to break down the stones. After fragmentation, the water head was replaced with a suction tube to remove the stone fragments and excessive water from the water jet. The procedure was performed under direct real time visualization with a  standard 3x magnification camera integrated into the cystoscope.
